Intro to modes

Vim is modal

In most editors every key types a letter. In Vim the same key does different things depending on the mode you are in.

Normal mode is home

You start in Normal mode, where keys are commands: move, delete, copy. Press i to switch to Insert mode and type like any other editor.

Escape gets you back

Press Esc to leave Insert mode. When in doubt, hit Esc. It always takes you home.
